Northern Pike

Bob Bird Trophy Northern Pike
Northern Pike
Angler: Bob Bird
Nikiski, Alaska
Weight: 20 lbs. Length: 42.5 inches
Area: Stormy Lake Date: November 24, 2001
ADFG State Trophy Certificate qualifier
Bob says "I was jigging a homemade rig of plastic squid
with herring chunk for bait, plus I had 2 large hooks in
tandem with snelled knots. It was about 8 feet of water
and we had caught lots of trout there the previous day
(both rainbow & dollies).

"The pike ripped off line like a bat-outta-hell and I
merely expected something in the 30 inch range.
Numerous passes underneathe the ice (which was clear
and about 12 inches thick) caused me to go bug-eyed.
I was convinced that he would snap the line on the ice
and everyone would accuse me of allowing the ice
refraction to get the better of my imagination."
