Sharing With The Bears!

Dave Cahan has the envious responsibility of planning and accompanying a group of anglers to Alaska each season from the Lower 48. They like diversity and end up sampling a variety of fishing opportunities during their visits. This year the group headed for the Alaska Peninsula to fish the Alagnak River during mid-August.

The silvers were late and slow fishing but they did wear their arms out hooking up with the abundant Chum salmon in the lower river. The fish were suckers for string leaches in purple/pink. Next stop was fishing the braids for rainbows, one of which is pictured here but with fishing lackluster it was time to try some new country.

They decided to try the Big River out on the Aleutian Islands where they had a great day fishing silvers, chums, pinks, Dollies and Char. To add to the excitment of the trip they had a significant number of brown bears in the area who were also fishing. Things got a bit too exciting for most guests as a close-encounter ensued. Adding some icing on the cake, the group spent some time on Ida Vein Creek and cashed in on some excellent grayling fishing.

Next year the plan is to return to the Kenai Peninsula for some saltwater kings and halibut.
