Lady Luck on the Deshka!

Without a doubt, a significant number of Alaskan anglers are women. And another fact is they are darn good at it. For whatever reason, I'd say lady anglers are more successful percentage-wise at catching kings than men. So my advice, always bring a gal along on your king salmon trips.

Rob Johnston provided this photo of his wife Maureen and her Deshka River king catch from this past summer. As Anchorage residents the Deshka is a short road trip from their home and although the river sees a lot of popularity during the king run, they prefer to fish 15 miles upstream and away from most of the crowds. This 44 pounder is typical of many fish taken in this stream but kings exceeding the 50 pound mark are no strangers to this productive drainage.
