Fall Turnover of Alaska Lakes Provide Good Trout Fishing! 9/20/99...Twice a year a phenomena called turnover occurs on most lakes in temperate and northern areas. In the fall this event signals resident rainbow and Dolly Varden trout to begin a feeding frenzy to fatten up before winter and freeze-up arrives. September is the month when most lakes in Alaska experience this as surface waters cool and sink to the bottom. But usually there are few anglers still out fishing by this time so the opportunities can be quite enjoyable as well as rewarding without any competition. These rainbows were taken last week from a local lake in the Soldotna area one calm evening on a flyrod using a #12 mosquito dry fly. Fish were agressively taking anything on the surface and these five ended up in the frying pan. Successful shore anglers can take these trout with shrimp or salmon roe fished from a bobber or on the bottom and the action will continue right up to freeze-up. Spinfishing with small castmasters or #0 Mepps spinners will also take fish, especially if you fish from a boat and can move around to find where the fish are congregating.
