Ninilchik King Salmon DerbyThe village of Ninilchik lies about half way between Soldotna and Homer. Originally an ancient site of the Dena'ina Indians, it was later settled by Russians employed by the Russian-America Company in the 1820's who primarily traded furs. When Alaska was sold to the United States, many of these settlers decided to stay on and became the ancestors of many people who still live in this community. The old Russian Village and Russian Orthodox Church are extremely popular with the crowds of photographers and painters who pass this way. This King Salmon derby is sponsored by the Deep Creek Charterboat Association. It runs from May 1 to June 15 and only catches from the saltwater fishery between Deep Creek and Stariski Creek are eligible. Awarding of prizes and raffle drawing will be held Sunday June 18, 1996, 3pm, at Deep Creek Sports Shop, Mile Post 137 Sterling Highway. Tickets can be purchased at many of the charter operations and local businesses. All fish will be weighed in at Deep Creek Sport Shop.
