Good Fishing Right in Your Backyard!

Just about every Alaskan angler has waited in anticipation for the return of salmon to their favorite fishing haunts. But we all know that some of those runs may not be returning for several more weeks or even months.

The Department of Fish & Game provides just the ticket to fill in the gap, often providing good to great fishing opportunities within minutes of your home. And a prime opportunity to take the kids fishing during an evening after work or teach your better half the art of flyfishing where you are bound to catch something. Success is always the best form of encouragement.

The Fish & Game stocking program is very successful in the Anchorage, Matsu and Fairbanks areas. The program lasts all summer long and stocks catchable size rainbow trout, arctic char, and chinook salmon in many lakes and ponds in and around these major population areas.

Fishing techniques can be as simple as a bobber and salmon eggs or shrimp which makes it easy for kids to participate. Late evening will see many fish feeding on aquatic insects on or near the surface and offer the flyfishing purist an opportunity to hone his/her skills or introduce a beginner to the art.

The following is a list of those ponds and lakes which have been stocked with catchable size fish through June 3rd. Many may be right next door or just down the road and provide a great opportunity to just unwind after a tough day at work. Stocking continues all summer long at varying intervals for each water depending on the amount of fishing pressure each receives. Look over the list and then grab your rods and take your kids fishin'.
