HOPE on the Kenai Peninsula
- Page 4 -

More Picturesque Hope

Hope maintains a population of 200 residents year 'round. The community has several summertime events including a Pink Salmon Fishing Derby from July 15 to August 15. There is no entry fee and as expected for a gold mining community, the first place prize is one ounce of GOLD!

The Hope Museum is one of the first places to stop. It is filled with interesting items and photos from the town's colorful historical past. Many "artifacts" are located outside of the Museum and the curator can advise you on many of the spots you won't want to miss on your visit.

The Hope Museum should be your
first stop in town.
Remnants and antiques from the gold rush days can be viewed in the area around the Museum.

A horse-drawn road grader.

Enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the cafes and meet the friendly residents. Hope boomed in the past and welcomes you today.
"Downtown" Hope is located at the mouth of Resurrection Creek and overlooks Turnagain Arm where Captain Cook once sailed in search of the Northwest Passage. The unique name was coined as Cook once again hit a deadend in his search and had to "turn again" in hopes of finding the real route to the east.

I'd hate to ride very far on this contraption....but then again, those miners were a tough lot.
